Local vs. Tourist Hotspots

These maps by photographer Eric Fischer are so amazing.

A mapping of photos taken from tourists & locals of specific cities.

Blue points on the map are pictures taken by locals (people who have taken pictures in this city dated over a range of a month or more).

Red points are pictures taken by tourists (people who seem to be a local of a different city and who took pictures in this city for less than a month).

Yellow points are pictures where it can’t be determined whether or not the photographer was a tourist (because they haven’t taken pictures anywhere for over a month). They are probably tourists but might just not post many pictures at all.

Here’s London:

And it’s so right. The solid blue cluster to the north east of the centre is Shoreditch and Hackney — the place that I would suggest tourists go for art and culture over all the more obvious tourist places.

And this is Melbourne:

…which I’m visiting in a couple on months time. We’re staying in an apartment in Fitzroy North which I’ve been told is one of the most desirable parts of the city and that just so happen to be where there’s a blue cluster to the north of the centre. Rad!

Interesting, even if you haven’t been to many of these cities.
